WHERE IT STARTED
Kookaburra Worm Farms is a family owned and operated business based in Queensland, established in 2003. Our founder and director, George Mingin, had already been in the worm industry for over 25 years - working in diverse roles of sales, customer service, marketing, transportation, research and development.
George was itching for a challenge, so he started by enrolling in a permaculture course that left him with the desire to grow something. He knew he needed to make a change as his purpose was no longer within inner city Mebourne. So, he traded the city life for the peaceful country lifestyle that the Widebay region had to offer.
Here, he applied his passion for worms into creating a worm farm with the single goal of offering the highest quality compost worms on the market. George had seen the mistakes the industry was making, and applied his extensive wormy knowledge into a farming process that worked with nature instead of against it.
This meant that his farming practice ensured ideal conditions for worm breeding, eating and growing - leading to developing cutting edge technology to deliver a premium product for his customers. Despite George’s industry knowledge, he hasn’t stopped learning even more on how to improve the quality of his worms through closely monitoring their unique patterns and habits - adapting his breeding process accordingly.
what we do today
In order to grow Kookaburra Worm Farms, we purchased a distribution business in 2006 which allowed us to expand our business into the live fishing bait market. We are still growing within the fishing market to this day, distributing our Catchall Crawlers to customers and major chain stores like Mitre 10, Bunnings Warehouse and BCF.
In 2007, we expanded again to dip our toes into compost worm products which led to the ability to breed Australian native worms later in 2009. This venture has rapidly grown as we fell into a completely open market that was lacking quality product solutions for home gardeners as well as commercial farmers. We strived to craft a solution for the domestic gardener where they could have the worlds easiest worm farm - being simpler, cost effective and delivered results they didn’t expect!
Our passion for the environment and high quality growing solutions led to the creation of WormGro - a unique worm cast liquid extract that has been developed and refined over 30 years. This project was driven by the need for an organic certified plant and soil food as well as a product that is available to the entire market. WormGro contains over one million species of microorganisms that work hard to boost your yield and maintain the soil quality from garden to farm.
From this adventure, we are leading players within the worm industry - being the largest supplier of worms in Australia. We continually work hard to learn more in order to refine our process that not only delivers premium worm products, but also to ensure the environment is considered every step of the way.
MEET THE FAMILY
Kookaburra Worm Farms is a family owned business to this day. The Mingin team begins with George, who continually researches and develops new processes that work with nature in order to maintain natural soil fertility - boosting soil health and plant growth. George has specialised knowledge in what happens beneath the soil, and how this greatly impacts the growth of your garden or farm.
George’s son Matt joined the team formally in 2015, applying his knowledge in biology, health and nutrition to focus on improving the health and quality of our soil. This is an important role as he factors in the human impact on the environment, refining the process to ensure quality and sustainability.
PROUDLY SUPPLY TO
I listened to the video and read your E-Book which were both very interesting and full of helpful tips
I have used your worms in the past and the service and quality of the worm are fantastic.
I felt a little nervous about whether they would survive in the post coming all the way from Queensland to South West Victoria. It took one week to arrive. I opened the box and found worms happily alive inside!
They are now incorporated into my worm farms. Thank you! 🙂
It’s time to take the plunge into the world of worms, start your composting journey today!
